01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Served bubbling in a searing stone pot, the mapo tofu is one of the definitive specialties to seek out at Kinsho Gyoza Sakaba. It arrives featuring a whole block of tofu, inviting you to break it apart with a spoon as the pleasant, numbing tingling of Sichuan pepper mingles with the richly savory, spicy sauce. It works equally well shoveled over plain white rice as a satisfying lunch set or shared gradually over drinks in the evening.
For noodles, the distinctly chewy, thick knife-cut noodles (daoxiao mian) are hard to pass up. The lineup covers varied profiles, starting with the tongue-numbing mala daoxiao mian, rich sesame-laden tantan daoxiao mian, and versions topped with tender braised pork belly. Combinations pairing the noodles with half-orders of fried rice or fried chicken make an easy choice when hunger calls for something substantial.
Dim sum items hold their own too, notably the house pan-fried gyoza bearing the shop's name and plump, filling stick gyoza packed with shrimp. A broad selection of reasonably priced small plates—such as mouthwatering chicken, scallion-tossed chashu pork, and chilled gizzard with cucumber—rounds out the menu nicely. Poured alongside draft beer or an all-you-can-drink plan, ordering several small dishes to graze on makes for an effortless, casual gathering.
With classic set meals like twice-cooked pork (huiguorou) and stir-fried liver with garlic chives also readily available, the spot functions as a reliable, everyday choice for solo lunches and casual dinners with friends alike.
